Ian Burrell, Global Rum Ambassador and Host of "When is a Rum not a Rum

Karen will be assisting the seminar host Ian Burrell with a lively discussion about the definition of rum.

"The Rum category is the most diverse spirits category in the world, and with EVERY rum producing country claiming that their rum is authentic what the hell is a REAL RUM? Global rum category ambassador Ian Burrell invites you to join into what will be a heated debate on rum rules, new definitions, rum shenanigans and the future of rum. If you're a RUM lover, this debate is not to be missed."

Wednesday July 20th
3:30-5:00pm
The New American Rum Revolution
Seminar - Sold Out

We will be part of a tasting and presentation about what is happening in American rum.

Rum was the original American spirit before the Revolution in the 1770s, fueled by cheap and readily accessible molasses coming from the Caribbean colonies. Excessive taxes and political pressure (and a little disagreement with England) changed everything. Finally, the nightmare of prohibition set the final nail in the coffin of the American Rum industry. Nearly a century later, we find craft rum distilleries sprouting up across America at an astounding pace. National, regional and local rums distillers are gaining well-deserved attention -- with many making their mark as true artisan spirits -- winning awards and setting new standards for authentic, hand-made rum.

We'll explore rum's past, taste rum's present and predict rum's future in a seminar hosted by the editors of Robs Rum Guide along with several award-winning American rum distillers.

BOOK SIGNING: Elevated Cocktails: Craft Bartending with Montanya Rum by Karen Hoskin

At the Hotel Monteleone.

From the beginning, Montanya Distillers of Crested Butte, Colo., has been as much about making great rum cocktails as it is about making great rum. The distillery’s co-founder and mixologist, Karen Hoskin, decided to capture the imagination of the cocktail, along with the beauty of the Colorado mountains, in her new book, “Elevated Cocktails: Craft Bartending with Montanya Rum.” The book includes more than 30 rum cocktail and infusion recipes, along with food pairing ideas and beautiful photography of cocktails and spectacular mountain scenery surrounding the distillery.

“This book captures what I adore: the beauty of Colorado, mountain rum distilled with love, and cocktails that elevate rum to the esteem it deserves,” said Hoskin. “The recipes in this book are a reflection of the creative environment in which we work every day at Montanya. Montanya’s rum bar is our cocktail laboratory and this book allows people to enjoy Montanya rum long after they’ve left our bar."
